| Places of Business Why paint a Mural on an Interior or Exterior wall of your business? Because a mural can:
- visually expand a space;
- "grow” another room or outside patio altogether;
- help visitors feel welcome and put them at ease;
- transform a strange wall or niche, where no can furniture fit, into a focal point;
- make time go by quicker when visitors can enjoy a pleasing environment;
- calm frightened children before seeing a doctor or dentist;
- define the different areas of activities in a classroom;
- improve productivity and morale amongst employees;
- encourage employees to think out of the box;
- improve communication amongst staff;
- serve as an ice breaker with clients;
- motivate and inspire employees;
- bring more business to a business with a mural on the outside walls;
- be a creative and fun way to liven cold, bare walls;
- create atmosphere with a painted window overlooking the ocean or other favorite spot;
- be a fun way to add an illusion, like a fireplace or bookcase or windows to your business or office;
- erase and curb graffiti.

MORE REASONS TO PAINT MURALS IN & AROUND A BUSINESS A
survey by Arts & Business revealed that "53% of the workers
surveyed felt that if their employer were to provide opportunities to
enjoy artistic activities they would be motivated in their work. 95%
of business owners surveyed said they felt that motivation is
'essential' or 'very important' in directly driving company
performance."
The City of Ottawa wrote in a letter: "We have
seen the benefits of murals in various cities in North America, as well
as a few in Ottawa. Murals not only help to erase graffiti, they also:
create landmarks, beautify a city, assist tourism, support the arts and artists and regenerate urban areas."
Research has shown: "Among
employees, workspace personalization has also been found to be
associated with enhanced environmental satisfaction, job satisfaction,
psychological well-being, and employee morale as well as reduced
turnover (Brill et al., 1984; Sundstrom, 1986; Wells, 2000).
About outdoor murals: "These
community murals have been found to have many benefits, including
instilling a sense of pride and dignity within the community, aiding in
the formation of social identity, communicating ideas and messages to
the community, and turning around stereotypes (Kirsch, 1995; Lippard,
1990; Sommer, 1975, 1981; Thomas & Rappoport, 1996). In addition,
murals bring attention to the mural site, brighten outdoor spaces, and
bring "joy and gaiety" to the dirty streets (Sommer, 1975, 1981). They
have also been found to encourage residents to take better care of the
environment and discourage graffiti (Sommer, 1975, 1981; Thomas &
Rappaport, 1996). Furthermore, an experiment comparing university
students’ responses to walls with murals on them and their responses to
bare walls has shown that walls with murals on them are highly
preferred (Sommer & Chang, 1982): Walls with murals were found to
be friendlier, happier, more attractive, and more active and zestful
than the same walls without murals. In summary, research suggests that
people like community murals and would like to see more of them
(Isreal, 1989).
